The Florida men’s track and field program sat in a pretty comfortable position heading into the final event of the NCAA Track & Field championships — two points behind leader Arkansas. Meaning, as long as the Gators relay team didn’t finish in dead last in the 4-x-400-meter relay, the national title was theirs.
The Gators proved to be a bunch of overachievers, finishing second and clinching the national title — their third title in five years.
“I told the guys that we had to ignore all that outside stuff and to believe in each other,” Florida coach Mike Holloway said. “We said all year long if it came down to the 4-x-400, we liked our chances.”
